Dermal Fillers (Restylane/Juvederm)

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments used to add volume, smooth wrinkles, and rejuvenate the skin. They are commonly used in cosmetic dermatology to address signs of aging and enhance facial features. Here are some key points about dermal fillers:

  1. Types of fillers: There are several types of dermal fillers available, including hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) fillers, and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) fillers. Each type has unique properties and is suited for different areas of the face and specific treatment goals.

  2. Treatment areas: Dermal fillers can be used to treat a variety of areas on the face, including nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, cheeks, lips, and under-eye hollows. They can also be used to enhance facial contours and add volume to areas that have lost volume due to aging.

  3. Treatment process: Dermal fillers are injected into the skin by a qualified healthcare provider using a fine needle or cannula. The procedure is relatively quick and typically does not require downtime. Results are immediate, and the effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors.

  4. Side effects: Common side effects of dermal fillers include temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. These side effects usually resolve on their own within a few days. More serious side effects, such as allergic reactions or infection, are rare but can occur.

  5. Maintenance: Dermal fillers are not permanent and will eventually be broken down and absorbed by the body. To maintain the results, repeat treatments are usually necessary. The frequency of treatments varies depending on the type of filler used and individual response.

What are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are a type of dermal filler that is used to add volume, smooth wrinkles, and rejuvenate the skin. HA is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps maintain hydration and volume. HA fillers are popular because they are biocompatible, meaning they are well-tolerated by the body and do not require allergy testing.  The most common brands of HA fillers are Restylane® and Juvederm®.  Each brand is comprised of a portfolio of individual fillers that have different characteristics that make them suitable for different treatment areas e.g., lips, cheeks, etc.
